GETTING A PERSPECTIVE OF LIFE'S BLESSING

A Memorable Journey...

Journey of Precious Memories,
Sharing and Enjoying Marvelous Moments,
Fostering acquaintance with strangers and learning new paths in life.

Sometimes, it takes a little of getting away from our comfort zone to make us realise just how fortunate our won lives are...and how for someone else out ther, life has not dealt a fairer deal! And we are thankful for the blessings and good life Allah God Almighty has bestowed on us.

My memorable journey began when Nieta received an e-mail from the Deebers Community to participate in their "Terlalu Istimewa Tour 08/09". The D Community was looking for volunteers to join "The Journey" which was a series of monthyly "touring cum-charity visits" to various locations all over malaysia for the year 2008/2009. The Tour Porgramme involved much more than just the physical act of giving out financial donations to the needy - it emphasised on intangible contributions partcularly requiring participants to share their time and company with the less fortunate children and senior citizens. In short, it was no run-of-the-mill charity but a programme that aimed to spare quality time reminiscing, bringing cheer and really "listening" as we foster acquaintancesw and friendship-bonding.

Nieta was really fired up and enthusiastically keen to be a part of the tour and I was naturaly drawn to be her "partner-in-crime" after some deliberation as we sorted out our personal family and time commitments. We finally decided to take the plunge and signed up for the "The Journey".

What started as just our passive involvement with the Deebers Commnity took on a more involved dimension when our family members, relative and friends learnt about our plans and and pledged their support for our "journey" with in-kind contirbutions and donations.

Our first "Tour Mission" was a visit to the Taman Sinar Harapan Home in Jitra, Kedah. Our team consisted of 60 volunteers with some as young as just 12 years of age!

We were struck by our first impression of the Taman Sinar Harapan Home. The adolescents there actually live to a very structured schedule. Their daily needs were relatively weel-catered for and we soon realised that the only aspect lacking in their day-today was LOVE, CONCERN and ATTENTION.

Visitors were warmly welcomed and the hospitality they shared with us was decidedly and unpretentiously warm as they whole-heartedly spent time with us even as we gave of our time just playing games with them and generally chatting with the inmates.

Of course, we did not drop in at the Home empty-handed. Aside from handing over our contributions of daily essentials, the adolescents were articularly thrilled to received colourful dolls and soft toys, judging from the many "ooh and aahs" we heard. Their apparent joy was a really rewarding sight to behold.

In fact, the Home is ever open and welcomes vounteers to visit and help out, They also have immediate needs for mattresses, single-fitted bed sheets, illows and blankets while others basic essentials and groceries such as milk powder, beverages, food items, supplements (such as multi-vitamins & vitamin C) and toiletries would help defray their monthyly expenses.

Our short journey up norht indeed was an eye-opener. Both Nieta and I resolved to be more thankful with our lot in life and not to complain the next time things momentarily do not work in our favour. We learnt that donations of money certainly afforded a certain leverl of comfort and weel-being but sparing worthwhile time was an immeasurably worthy contribution. We are looking forward to our next "journey" with the Deebers Community when we can bring more smiles to those who are ess fortunate - the orphans, underpriviledged children, abused and / or abandoned women and children.
